How to determine the towing capacity of your vehicle?
Before hiring a trailer, it is important to know what your vehicle can tow.

To meet your legal requirements when towing, there are a few factors to check which will determine your vehicles towing capacity:
- Tow within your vehicles towing capacity, which is the maximum amount your vehicle is able to tow as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. The manufacturer will list the maximum ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) of both braked and un-braked towing capacities. This refers to trailers that are fitted with or without brake systems.
- Ensuring the tow bar towing capacity is NOT exceeded. This can be found via the compliance plate usually stamped onto the tow bar.
- The tow ball rating which is stamped onto the tow ball.
- Ensure the Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM); the combined mass of both the trailer and its load when coupled to a vehicle, does NOT exceed the vehicles towing capacity.
Vehicle are governed by the lowest related tow part of the vehicle. For example, the manufacturer may state that the vehicle is rated to 3000kg however, the tow bar itself may only be rated for 2000kg. In this case, the lowest denominator is the maximum capacity the vehicle can tow, which in this case is 2000kg.
Other factors to take into consideration are:
- The vehicles Gross Combined Mass (GCM). This is the maximum weight the vehicle can carry which includes the combined mass of both tow vehicle and trailer, and includes all loads inclusive of fuel and passengers.
- Ball load. This is the weight of which pushes downwards onto the tow hitch from the trailer when hitched. The loads position within the trailer can increase or decrease the ball weight.
